Temporary Power FAQ
Straight answers to the questions Marin builders and owners ask us most.
Permits, PG&E and timing
Who pulls the permit for a temp pole?
We do. The electrical permit is filed with the town building division or, for unincorporated areas, the Marin County Community Development Agency.
How do I know if my lot is in a town or in the county?
A mailing address does not tell you. We look up the parcel on the county assessor map and file with whichever office has jurisdiction.
Why does PG&E take so long?
PG&E has to review the request, schedule a crew and sometimes design new line work or a transformer. Simple jobs move faster. Three-phase and long runs take longer.
What is a green tag?
It is the inspector’s sign-off on the temp service. PG&E will not set the meter until the inspection passes.
Can I start work before the meter is set?
Yes, with a generator. We size one for your tools and take it off rent when the service is live.
Who is my utility if I have MCE?
MCE buys the power for many Marin customers, but PG&E owns the lines and sets the meter. The temp service request goes to PG&E.
Equipment and sizing
Is 100 amps enough for my job?
It covers most single-family remodels. A new home, a site trailer plus heavy tools, or small commercial work usually needs 200A.
When do I need three-phase?
For large motors, hoists, welders or a commercial build with three-phase gear. We check your equipment list and tell you.
How big a generator should I rent?
Motors pull far more current at startup than when running. We size for those starting loads so the unit does not stall when two tools kick on together.
Do your cameras need power or internet on site?
Solar trailers carry their own power and a cellular uplink. Pole-mounted cameras can run off the temp panel.
What kind of internet works on a remote lot?
Bonded cellular that uses more than one carrier works on most sites. Where signal is weak, a Starlink-class satellite kit fills in.
Do you rent heaters as well as coolers?
Yes. In winter we supply portable heaters for drywall, paint and flooring, and in summer we bring 1 to 5 ton spot coolers.
Pricing, contracts and scheduling
How much does a temp pole cost in Marin?
Most 100A to 200A single-phase jobs run $1,800 to $4,500 installed, plus PG&E fees and a monthly rental. We give a written quote after a site walk.
Are rentals month to month?
Yes. Cameras, internet and poles bill monthly. Generators, lights and coolers usually bill weekly.
Is fuel included with a generator?
Fuel is billed separately. We deliver on a schedule so you do not need to watch the gauge.
What days do you work?
Monday to Saturday, 7am to 7pm. Call ahead for emergencies outside those hours and we will do what we can.
